It may have been overcast, but from the smiles on the runner`s faces you would not have known. On Saturday May 9th, a total of 220 runners came out to show their support for those living with lupus. Runners and volunteers alike woke up early to join us at Central Islip High School for the 2nd Annual 5K Run for Lupus.Large2014-05-31_2020_33_12

The crowd gathered early as they warmed up in the gym, put on their Run for Lupus T-Shirts and enjoyed the gifts in their goody bags from local business sponsors, Astoria Bank, the Sayville Running Company, Moe`s Southwest, Road ID and Fusco, Brandenstein and Rada.

The camaraderie was evident as runners from around the community as well as students from nearby districts greeted each other at the starting line, ready to engage in some fun competition for a good cause. Several groups of friends and classmates ran together for both the fun and the competition, enjoying waiting by the finish line to see who came in first.

The event raised over $22,000; an increase of almost $5,000 more in revenue than at last year`s inaugural run. Thanks to everyone who participated, the 5k Run for Lupus is quickly blossoming into our second major fundraising event of the year.

Our Presenting Sponsor, Universal Testing; Front Runner Sponsor, In Honor of Mary Geraghty; and Pace Setter Sponsors, Team Valerie and PRI, not only generously supported the event but representatives of each, attended and joined in the fun. Large2014-05-31_2021_35_47

Patrick Geraghty, President of the Lupus Alliance of LIQ and Run Sponsor stated, “It was a pleasure and a privilege to participate in the second annual 5K Run for Lupus and Health Fair. The organizing and support team members did a superb job of managing the myriad of details that made running the race very easy indeed. I ran to honor my wife Mary and for all who are effected by and involved with finding a cure for Lupus. Thank you for all supporting and participating in this year’s event and I look forward to seeing you all next year.”

Our success last year built great word of mouth throughout the running community. Many runners were repeat attendees who brought new competitors to race alongside them at this year`s event. Family and friends enjoyed waiting at the finish line to cheer on all of the runners, volunteer students handed out water donated by B.J.`s of Islandia, Target and Home Depot, and Rocky from WBAB gave out T-Shirts and gifts to all of the finishers.

Large2014-05-31_2021_22_25Cynthia Monthie from the EOC and Larry Phillips from Central Islip High School along with the Wellness Committee had the 6th Annual Health and Wellness Fair ready to go as the runners crossed the finish line. Runners enjoyed their post run snacks provided by Whole Foods, UNeeda Bagel, Stop and Shop and Terrace Bagels as they entered the Health Fair to await the race results.

Raffle winners were ecstatic to win prizes donated by Oheka Castle, Friends Travel in Levittown, the Sayville Running Company and the Islandia Marriott.

From the start of the day at registration to the very last award everyone had a great time. As runners were leaving for the day, several sought out our volunteers and staff to let them know how impressed they were with the run and committed to come back again next year.

We were also excited to officially announce at her first event, our new Executive Director, Patricia D`Accolti, who expressed her gratitude to everyone who helped make the 5K Run for Lupus a race to remember and is looking forward to a 3rd Annual 5K Run event next May.
