The 22nd Annual Walk-Along for Lupus was a Fun, Successful Day.  Over $195,000 Raised at The 22nd Annual Walk-Along for Lupus!

Bright and early on Sunday morning our dedicated walkers came out in full force to help celebrate the 22nd Annual Walk-Along for Lupus! Although the day was a chilly one, everyone arrived with smiles on their faces, ready to walk and donate to help those who live with lupus in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens.  D.J. Rocky from WBAB along with long-time volunteer Andrew Alderman, started the morning off with some fun calisthenics to get everyone warmed up and ready to go.

The talented Freeport Marching Band and Color Guard performed for the enthusiastic crowd and had everyone dancing along to the beat of their drums._M349791-0

Board Members, Steven Alberti, Mark Salsberg and David Brod joined our Executive Director Patricia D`Accolti on stage to say thank you to some of our top teams, schools and sponsors for making the walk a successful day of fun and togetherness.

Member and winner of our recent Ambalu Design Jewelry contest, Angela Marie Morrison, then spoke about her life with lupus and why being involved with our organization is so important to her and to all of those living with lupus. She spoke eloquently about how the disease has affected her life and how with the help of her family and friends she has fought back against the intrusion lupus has made on her life._M349773

The walk began at 10am led by the Freeport Marching Band with volunteer students from a local Key Club cheering everyone on as the start ribbon was cut. The give-a-ways from our generous sponsors were fantastic and everyone enjoyed Carol the Clown, and taking pictures with the USA Skateasauras. Kids and parents alike loved having their face painted by Kelley and Jessica, volunteers from new walk sponsor, Prestige NY.  Afterwards everyone sat and enjoyed their lunch in the sun, listening to the toe tapping music provided by longtime walk sponsor, the Roadhouse Band.

Overall, it was a wonderful day that overwhelmed the Board and Staff of the Lupus Alliance of LIQ with gratitude. The dedication of our volunteers, sponsors and walkers is truly an amazing to witness and be a part of. Every year we are humbled by the show of emotion, kindness and camaraderie that is shown from everyone that attends the walk. A mere thank you from us will never be enough to express how we feel about those who donate, attend, volunteer and support the Walk-Along for Lupus year after year.

We would like to give special thanks to our generous sponsors who manned tables at the event and gave our walkers some fabulous give-a-ways: Bethpage Federal Credit Union, NSLIJ, Rhino LED, Fusco, Brandenstein and Rada, News 12, Astoria Federal Savings, and  Horizon Pharma. _M349781

_M349909To Uncle Wally’s, Arizona Beverage Co, Teamsters Local 202, King Kullen, Rollin Dairy, Pretzel Crisps, Deep River Snacks, and Wendy`s for donating their products to the event. Member, Ernest Spann deserves an extra special thanks for picking up and delivering the fruit to us as he does every year!

Thank you to Scott from AJ2 Security for helping ensure our security and to the Bellmore/Merrick EMS for making sure everyone was safe throughout the event.  Year after year, Andy Marlin lends us his time and talent by taking all of the pictures at the walk. He is indispensable and we thank him once again for his dedication.

112 teams walked with us this year, giving us one of the biggest number of teams we have ever had. Reading the homemade signs and T-Shirts designed by teams who were walking in honor of or sadly in memory of someone with lupus is one of the most beautiful moments of the day.

One of our walkers said it best this year, “So many people don’t realize how widespread lupus is. It isn’t just a disease that you hear about sporadically in the news. It affects your mother, your wife, your best friend. It’s our job to make sure everyone is aware of this disease. Otherwise, we can’t combat it, that is what the Walk-Along for Lupus is all about.”
